All About Us!
The Disciples of Christ - Who We Are
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a community of about 800,000 Christians in
3,700 congregations in the United States and Canada. Two groups of frontier Christians
came together in 1832 to form the foundation of today's Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ). They shared the view that people should not be excluded from fellowship in the
church because they didn't adhere to particular human-made creeds. They used to say there
is "no creed but Christ." Today's Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) still
thinks that way. We study the Bible to deepen our connection to God through Jesus Christ,
and to discover what God wants us to do.
OUR VISION
To be a faithful, growing church, that demonstrates true community, deep Christian
spirituality and a passion for justice. (Micah 6:8)
OUR MISSION
To be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our
doorsteps "to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)
OUR IMPERATIVE
To strengthen congregational life for this mission. (Ephesians 4:11-13, 15-16)
Let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD.
-Jeremiah 9:24
The History of the Mackinaw
Christian Church
Leaders from the Disciples of Christ and the Christian Church shook hands
on January 1, 1832, in Cane Ridge Kentucky and became the movement called The Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ). The congregation, which is now the Mackinaw Christian
Church, Disciples of Christ, began meeting in homes before the Village of Mackinaw was
incorporated. Elder James A. Lindsey, a member of the Disciples of Christ Christian
Church, came to the eastern part of Mackinaw Township in 1834. He invited neighbors to his
home for worship services and formed a congregation called Mt. Pleasant. In 1837, he
called a meeting at Mt. Pleasant school house east of town urging the organization to form
a church. In 1849 the growing congregation voted to build its church in Mackinaw on East
Madison Street. The second edifice was built on the present site in 1875. The third
building, which is the original portion of the present church, was built in 1908. A
parsonage east of the church was erected in 1941. Remodeling of the basement was completed
in 1959-1960. An addition on the entire south side of the church was completed in 1964.
Extensive remodeling was done in the sanctuary in 1975. Other major building improvements
include: Sanctuary and Sunday School wing air condition, Sunday School wing windows
replaced with thermal glass windows, wheelchair lift, handicap accessible restrooms in the
Fellowship Hall, and the north and south tower entrances remodeled.
